A Thank You to Poetry…

How did you know
The words that crawled like ants
Beneath this silk skin
Spun like a spider's web
Made for catching flies
Without ever letting them in

How did you know there was more than the
Pineapple juice
That trickled like from my lips down to my chin
Luring insects from afar
On paper wings
With cardboard cut stars
While bearing the wasp's terrible sting

How perfectly you placed the honeycomb in my mouth
As I sucked on a lozenge of an unfamiliar flavor
And when hope seemed lost and I was misunderstood
You gave me courage that I could savor
